I had a similar experience when I was in grad school and had to do a "cognate essay" in lieu of a thesis because I had chosen the course heavy option for my English MA at UofT in the late '80s. As I sat there in "Fort Book" scrolling through endless reels of microfiche it occurred to me that my paper, "Poems appearing in British newspapers upon the occasion of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow" might, MIGHT be of interest to maybe, MAYBE three people -- me, my advisor, and just possibly some other grad or post-graduate student somewhere around the world with a passing interest in either British newspapers, Napoleon, or God help them, English poetry of the Romantic period. I completed the paper, got my degree and left academia forever. I am content with my decision ...
