thank you. we need this level of explanation to keep us from being fooled. i am not so sure about "bizarre." ignorance is the default state of the public. this is not their fault. they are lied to about everything every minute of the day and they do not have time to check facts or learn the details that make a difference. nor could they make any difference if they did know.

democracy, if it is working right, draws from a large population where the areas of ignorance differ from place to place, prejudice to prejudice, and is hopefully cancelled out. meanwhile the representatives are held to a level of basic honesty (they lie all the time, but only to their constituents and not so deeply as to endanger the country) and by fear of retribution from the other side's representatives who presumably know the truth, if nothing else. we no longer have a working democracy.
